So we were discussing marginal tax rates last week. Of course it doesn’t make sense to cut your income from $300,000 to $250,000 to save a few bucks on taxes, especially since you would only be taxed at a higher rate on that $50,000.
However…
When you’re talking about very small differences, rounding off really matters on your taxes. I was just doing ours, and it turns out that I’m exactly $0.02 above a cutoff. So if I don’t round off, I pay $13 more in tax than if I do round off.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a problem if they just gave you the mathematical formula (which can be written in a few lines) rather than the 12-page table.
Federal income tax formula. Come on, you non-mathy people, is this REALLY that much harder to understand than the table? If your income is X, then your tax is
0% on the first $8000, 10% on the next amount up to $23950, 15% on the next amount up to $75650, 25% on the next amount up to $144800, 33% on the next amount up to $216600, and 35% on anything above that.
So for example if my income were $40000 then my tax is
T = 0.10*(23950-8000) + 0.15*(40000-23950) = $4002.50.
Seems much simpler to me, and avoids that stupid rounding off problem that comes from approximating a simple formula with a complex table.
Oh well, just my two cents.
Many years ago, whilst a student going for a Masters of Computer Science one of the classes had a project of writing code in COBOL to duplicate the U.S. Tax tables. At the time “mind blowing” was a popular phrase. This project gave meaning to the phrase.

P.S. I’ll grant you that Blagojevich and Spitzer were worse, but they were tossed from office! Bill Richardson’s corruption puts him close to Ritter, but at least he’s competent!
First off, you compare above board approved spending with corruption? How desperate are you Repubs that this is the best you can do.
Second, any successful businessperson will tell you that at times like this smart companies make strategic investments. You can discuss if this met the criteria of important and strategic. But to just say no trip like this should be considered – that’s short-sighted.
Third, even el-cheapo Microsoft (where even Bill felw coach in the continental US) paid for business class for international flights. We want Ritter & Co arriving in good enough shape to sell.

If you’re thinking about filing a claim that Bernie Madoff ripped you off, I recommend you do it sooner rather than later.
It sounds like you don’t have to show receipts or account statements or any documentary proof to file a claim.
It could be like winning the lottery, if they ever find any of the money.
